Rivergate’s Health & Wellness Blog
Welcome to Rivergate Pharmacy!
No one wants to be in a situation where medication is required to relieve pain or heal an ailment; however, at some point it becomes an unavoidable occurrence for most of us. When we feel bad, we focus our energy on feeling better. We don’t want to take a number, stand in a long line, or feel like we’re just one of many faceless customers.
Lori Kearney understands this. She is a 1976 graduate of the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, and has been a practicing pharmacist in the local community since 1982. She purchased Rivergate Pharmacy and Compounding Center in 2010 out of her passion to provide personalized care and expertise in a professional and welcoming environment.
Whether you are new in town or have lived in Durango all your life, Lori and her staff at Rivergate Pharmacy treat you like a long-time friend or family member, with regard and kindness. In fact, it is their mission to enhance the health and well-being of their customers and community by providing compassionate, attentive service that exceeds expectations and demonstrates their responsiveness, professionalism, integrity and respect for all who walk through their doors.
What can you expect at Rivergate Pharmacy? A knowledgeable and dedicated staff: Renee, Hannah, Whitney, Wendy, Darin, Celeste, Paige, Britney, Lisa, and Matthew; and of course Lori herself. Service with a sincere smile. Compassion and understanding.
The entire staff shares an enthusiasm for quality service and care in a small community pharmacy setting, and is committed to helping their community take proactive steps toward healthier, more comfortable lives. For example, they provide outcome-oriented education, specialty products and services. The pharmacists provide personal consultation to help make sure medication utilization is safe, effective, and affordable. Their focus is on helping patients, whether through traditional prescription services, compounded and natural remedies, or a personalized blend of both.
In addition to offering a wide selection of traditional products and services, Rivergate Pharmacy features the only compounding center in Durango, empowering patients and physicians alike with greater healthcare options. Each compounded medication is carefully reviewed to ensure the highest quality and integrity in the formulas and methods of preparation.
What is compounding?
Compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medication that has been practiced for years by pharmacists to meet patients’ medical needs. The practice of compounding medications decreased significantly in the 1950s when many products became available commercially. The one-size-fits-all approach of commercial products, however, resulted in some patients’ needs not being met, and thus compounding has experienced a rebirth. Pharmacists can prepare prescription medication from scratch, mixing exact amounts of active ingredients to satisfy the requirements of both patients and physicians.
What are some of the benefits of compounding medications?
Doctors and compounding pharmacists are able to mix other medications to minimize negative side effects, meet unique health needs, and eliminate possible allergic reactions. In addition, there are numerous effective drugs that are no longer commercially available because they are not profitable for the pharmaceutical companies. However, they are available to compounding pharmacists with a prescription from a doctor.
Some dosage forms may be difficult to swallow, especially for children and the elderly. Compounding pharmacists can produce alternative forms like liquids, add flavoring, etc., to help the medicine go down more easily. Likewise, they can provide customized dosages for prescribed medications, where pharmaceutical companies package many medications only in predetermined strengths. Veterinarians also work with compounding pharmacists to produce flavorful, treat-like medications in the right dosages for pets, whether it’s a hamster, a dog or a horse. It’s for this reason that zoos frequently work with compounders to meet their variety of needs.
Rivergate Pharmacy also carries all natural and homeopathic alternatives and supplements, something that helps set this Durango pharmacy apart from others. As a locally owned and operated independent pharmacy, Lori enthusiastically supports the Local First campaign by proudly offering products from several local companies, including Dancing Willow Herbs and Heidi’s Healing Herbals. There’s even a little something for our furry family members: dog and cat treats from Zuke’s Performance Pet Nutrition.
So when you find yourself in need of pharmaceutical care or advice, look to Lori Kearney and her friendly and caring staff at Rivergate Pharmacy and Compounding Center, located in the Rivergate Medical Office Building.
