Reasons To Adopt A Pet

According to the Humane Society, if you’re thinking about adding a furry companion to your family, you should consider adoption instead of purchasing an animal. Here’s why:

You save a life when you adopt a pet. About 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the United States. Many people give up their pets, but there aren’t enough people willing or ready to adopt them from the shelters.

You get a healthy pet when you adopt. Most shelters vaccinate the animals upon arrival. Many will have the animals spayed or neutered before allowing them to be adopted. If you have specific needs many shelters will also screen the animals to make sure that you pick one with a behavior and temperament that is right for you.

Adoption will save you money. Adopting a pet from an animal shelter or rescue group is much less expensive than buying a pet at a pet store or through other sources.

Adopting a pet will make you feel better. Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally, and physically beneficial. Caring for a companion animal can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation in all age groups.

If you adopt, you won’t be supporting puppy mills and pet stores. Puppy mills are “factory style” breeding facilities that put profit above the welfare of dogs. Most animals raised in puppy mills are housed in shockingly poor conditions with improper medical care, and the parents of the puppies are kept in cages to be bred over and over for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever joining a family. After they’re no longer profitable, breeding dogs are simply discarded – either killed, abandoned or sold at auction. By adopting instead of buying a pet, you will be helping to put the puppy mills out of business, stopping animal cruelty.
